A construction and regeneration specialist has enlisted a group of enthusiastic mini-beast experts, to help convert a disused area of land into a safe haven for local wildlife.

Although still at school, the young biologists and botanists from Esh Winning Primary School and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs RC Primary School, joined up with a team from Galliford Try Partnerships North, to work on the project on land adjacent to a £5.6 million new homes initiative in Esh Winning.  The company is developing 50 bungalows and houses for Home Group.

The pupils undertook a wildlife survey and embarked upon their own construction project – creating ‘The Bug Hotel’ – a wooden structure which offers the perfect retreat for bugs, grubs and creepy crawlies.

Hayley Bell, from Galliford Try Partnerships North, said: “Using this land to create a safe habitat for wildlife is a fantastic thing to do and has also offered the opportunity for local children to learn about the diverse nature of our indigenous plants and animals.

“Although I’m not sure I’ll be choosing The Bug Hotel for my holiday this year, we’ll be keeping an eye on the little creatures who do – as well as hoping they leave some five star reviews!”

Louise Keenan, Head Teacher at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs RC Primary School, added: “The children had a great time constructing the bug hotel in the wildlife garden. Being able to work alongside real builders from Galliford Try Partnerships North to have their designs brought to life, made the process engaging and relevant as well as providing a clear link to future careers.”

Caroline Hodgson, Head Teacher at Esh Winning Primary School, added: “It was lovely to have the opportunity to work with our neighbouring school and with Galliford Try Partnerships North. Our children thoroughly enjoyed their day and were delighted to see elements of their designs come to life. They look forward to seeing how the Bug Hotel develops over time with its occupants of creepy crawlies!”
